Meet the Team: Leiden University Medical Center

Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC) is a university medical center located in the Netherlands. LUMC plays an active and innovative role in healthcare at the regional, national, and international level. This is reflected in its three core tasks: patient care, scientific research, and the education of healthcare professionals.

Within the LUMC, The BioSemantics group conducts research in three interconnected key areas: the implementation & adoption of the FAIR principles in health data infrastructures, the development of analysis methods that benefit from semantically enriched data, and knowledge discovery for translational applications in diseases. The FAIR principles are a set of 15 principles that aim to improve the Findability, Accessibility, Interoperability and Reusability of data, for example, by requiring that a description of the data is registered online and that the format of the data is following community standards.

“We investigate the implementation of FAIR data principles to achieve a better substrate for efficient data and knowledge analysis across the boundaries of institutes and countries.”
– dr. Marco Roos

In the PaLaDin project, the BioSemantics group contributes to the integration of data from diverse organizations by implementing the FAIR principles. A significant part of this effort is focused on standardizing data by converting it to meet community standards for healthcare data. In addition to this, the BioSemantics group focuses on the implementation of federated analysis using FAIR infrastructure, which improves patient privacy by keeping data at their source location.

This project is supported by the Innovative Health Initiative Joint Undertaking (IHI JU) under grant agreement No 101132943. The JU receives support from the European Union’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme, COCIR, EFPIA, EuropaBio, MedTech Europe, Vaccines Europe (and the FSHD Society and TREAT-NMD Services Ltd as contributing partners participating in the project). The project will also receive funding from UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) under the UK government’s Horizon Europe funding guarantee [grant numbers 10105921, 10103989, and 10083579]
